A great nanny-family relationship starts with clear expectations. While job ads and interviews set the foundation, a well-structured contract ensures that both parties are aligned from day one.
At Pro Nannies, we always advise nannies and families to treat their contract as a working document—one that protects, guides, and sets the tone for a professional relationship.
On Playdate episode two, Nanny 101: How Does It Work?, we explore why contracts matter and how they support both nannies and families in creating a positive and long-lasting dynamic.

The Importance of a Nanny Contract
A contract is more than just paperwork—it’s a legal agreement that defines the terms of employment, roles, and responsibilities. Without one, misunderstandings can arise, leading to frustration on both sides.
A strong contract should cover:
✅ Roles & Responsibilities – “Nursery duties” is a broad term. Does the family expect light housekeeping? Meal prep? Laundry? Be clear from the start.
✅ Working Hours & Flexibility – What are the contracted hours? If a parent comes home early, does the nanny still work? If extra hours are needed, how is that handled?
✅ Salary & Benefits – This includes holiday pay, overtime rates, and pension contributions.
✅ Notice Period & Contract Review – What happens if circumstances change? Having a clear exit strategy benefits both parties.
Contracts Protect Both Families & Nannies
A contract isn’t just a list of rules imposed by the family—it’s a mutual agreement that ensures both parties have a fair and professional working relationship. If a misunderstanding occurs, the contract serves as a reference point to clarify expectations.
Without one, situations can quickly become stressful. On Playdate I recall a time when I felt a family was taking advantage of me. But after checking the original job ad, I realised that certain expectations were never actually agreed upon. A contract removes this uncertainty, making sure everything is in writing.

Your Contract is a Negotiation Tool
Many nannies assume that they must accept a contract as-is—but that’s not the case. If there’s a clause you’re unsure about, discuss it with the family.
💡 Top Tip: Even if you've verbally agreed to a role, always read your contract carefully before signing.
If there are changes or missing details, don’t be afraid to ask for amendments.
This applies to families, too! If a nanny raises concerns, be open to discussion. A fair and well-balanced contract helps build trust and prevents issues later down the line.

Finding the Right Fit
At the end of the day, the right nanny-family match is about respect. If a family’s reasonable requests aren’t being met, they do not have to settle, it’s okay to keep looking—there’s always a nanny for that.
If a contract includes unreasonable conditions or makes a nanny feel undervalued, it may not be the right fit. Nannies are professionals, and they have the right to pick, choose, and refuse roles that don’t align with their values.
If you need support with contract negotiations, Pro Nannies is here to help. A well-structured contract is the first step in a successful nanny-family relationship. Let’s get it right together. 💜
